Scorekeepers

Anyone responsible for scoring games for HPHL must familiarize themselves with the information in this section.

All games must be scored live using an iPad.

Paper-only scoring is no longer permitted, as officials and coaches must sign off on Game Sheets immediately after the game.

key points

  • Player Selection:
  • At the beginning of every game, all players will default to "unselected."
  • There should NEVER be more than 20 active players, including goalies, on the game sheet (up to 18 skaters and 2 goalies).
  • Coaches:
  • Coaches on the bench must be marked as "coaching". If a coach is absent, change their status to "away," or if serving a suspension, "suspended".
  • Suspensions:
  • If a player or coach is serving a suspension, note which game suspension it is (e.g., "1st of 1 game" or "2nd of 3 games").
  • Affiliated Players:
  • Players pulled up from lower teams or borrowed goalies must be added as "affiliated players" for that specific game. Do not add them permanently; they must be added as "for this game only" each time they are pulled up.
  • Roster Review:
  • The head coach from each team must sign on the iPad prior to the game to confirm the accuracy of the roster.
  • Goalie Changes:
  • Update the Game Sheet promptly to indicate any goalie changes as they occur. Since shots on goal are recorded in real-time, entering goalie changes immediately helps ensure accurate shot tracking.
  • Penalties:
  • At the end of the game, review, count, and verify penalty information with the official. Add additional game misconducts as needed (e.g., 4 penalties by the same player, 12 penalties by the same team, or 2 major penalties by the same player).
  • Official Sign-Off:
  • The official must sign the Game Sheet, verifying the accuracy of the game data.
  • Game Notes:
  • Document any suspensions or additional information in the Game Notes section.
  • Upload the Game:
  • Remember to mark game as complete after the referee signs off on the game.

Game Times

Varsity games – three 17 minute periods, with an ice make between the second and third period.

JV games – three 15 minute periods, no ice make during game.

Girls’ games – three 15 minute periods, no ice make during game.

All start of game warm ups are 5 minutes. There is no additional warm up prior to the third period for varsity.

All regular season games are subject to a curfew. When clock time remaining is equal to remaining scheduled game time, the clock should go to run time. Officials and both benches must be notified.

For games ending in a tie at the end of regulation, and if time permits, a 5-minute 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime with stop time will be played. No shootouts will occur during the regular season. If the game remains tied at the end of overtime, it will end as a tie.

mercy rule

HPHL enforces a six-goal mercy rule in the third period. If the goal differential reaches six or more, the clock will switch to running time. Should the differential drop below six goals, the clock will return to stop time.

Additionally, if there is a six-goal lead at the end of the second period, and both coaches agree, the ice resurfacing between the second and third periods may be skipped.
